Francesco Grimaldi discovered diffraction of light. He was a Jesuit scholar and teacher and his early work as an assistant included making observations for a detailed map of the Moon. He performed some fundamental experiments in physics and in his book Physico-mathesis de Lumine he describes light as a substantial entity with undulatory properties.
