Program
- Jim Rodgers introduced Sandy Briggs with the Woodland Public Library. In short, "she is a really good person." She oversees a $1.78 M budget and handles administrative tasks, oversight and planning. Myth #1 Libraries are sentimental favorites we need to support. Myth #2 Libraries are no longer necessary in the Internet age. Sandy spent the remainder of her presentation dispelling these myths. The Woodland Public Library was started in 1892 and is the oldest continuing operating Carnegie Library in California. They serve 20,000 people per month. The Library is currently undergoing an exterior rennovation of windows, stucco, and roof tiles. Sandy discussed the interior rennovations that the library underwent in 2005. These rennovations continues the role of the Library as the Community's Living Room.
-
- An alarming trend noted in a National Endowment for the Arts report is that people are reading less and less each year. The social implications are profound both in a positive context for people who are good readers as well as those who do not read. To address some of these concerns, the library staff have completely refreshed the collection, through targeted spending in various areas over the last several years. The Library currently has over 95,000 items in their collection broken down over children's to adult large print items. There are over 30,000 items checked out each month. The Library hosts the Woodland Literacy Program, offers tutoring programs at Monroe Detention Center and Juvenile Hall in an attempt to break the cycle of illiteracy. They also offer programs at the Wayfarer's Center and a No Barriers Program. One of Sandy's favorite activities is the summer reading program that has just concluded at the Library this year. Programs like the summer reading program have been shown to prevent the erosion of literacy skills during the summer. This year, over 700 children participated. Providing community based programs such as author visits, museum exhibits, magicians, etc. is another outreach program of the Library and thier staff.
-
- Sandy is proud to be involved with a community based program that has such widespread support and enthusiastic particpants. Sandy concluded her presentation by answering members questions. One thing that the library did this year was provide fliers and personal contact at every school in Woodland.

Program
- John Smythe introudced - Bonnie Fernandez Executive Director of the Center for Produce Safety. Bonnie reported that in the last 9 months there have been over 900 product recalls. After the spinach recall in 2006, the USDA decided that we needed to take back control of the monitoring of produce safety. A produce production organization contributed $2M for set up costs and Taylor Farms contributed another $2M for research. The new name for the center is the Center for "Where+How+How". Essentially, this is what they are trying to determine in all cases of product safety.
-
- Bonnie described the advisory structure of the Center, located at UC Davis, and dealing with global produce safety issues. There are a variety of interests sitting on the board including producers, researchers, and distribution. The Center for Produce Safety (CfPS) has 4 strategic priorities
- #1 Become a clearing house and repository of research information- they know research is needed but they are trying to identify what research has been done and what needs to be done in the future globally. This will be housed on a "bigger than Google" website for all to read. Currently there are about 200 research projects underway;
- #2- Facilitate new actionable research- Initially funded by Taylor Farms. The first RFP has just been released for upto $1M to be announced on November 1. These will be 1 year projects that come from collaborations amongst producer groups. There are currently 23 areas identified to address the Where+How+How questions. In the past 5 years, there have been 5 big leaders in the area of produce safety- cantalopes et al and three pathogens salmonella, e. coli, listeria . In addition there will be another announcement of research funding available from a global research partnership using matching funds from the intial Taylor Donation;
- #3 Provide communication, outreach, and training for industry, research and regulatory sectors-This includes the development of advisory committees reflecting a global produce environment. They realized that product safety is not a competitive issue but is only as valuable as the weakest link in the chain. An example is that the recent tomato recall also impacted other associated produce products such as peppers. Often, we also find that it is not necessarily the products but the transferance of those products
- #4 Fund the strategic plan- Begin by matching the first $1M and matching with other sources of funding. Bonnie's goal is to raise $3M per year. Research is not cheap but it is important. Bonnie emphasized that the food supply is safe, but the major difference is that problems are reported more often and more widely. She also described that many of our food products are imported by many of the same companies that also grow food locally.
- $5 The CfPS will be recognized as the go-to organization coordinating efforts to enhance the safety of produce.
Bonnie concluded her presentation by answering questions from members. One point she made was that produce and meat fall under two different regulatory agencies. One of the problems that regulator agencies have is that many of the pathogens on food take a while to cause illness up to a week or two. This is difficult because many people do not remember what they ate a week ago. One of the biggest challenges is the trail that produce takes from field to table. There are so many places that infection can occur and so many different methods of production and harvest where exposure can happen. John asked Bonnie to clarify the point that there may not be more sickness than in the past, but more reporting. Henry M. asked about the collaboration with CDC- Bonnie reported that CDC recognizes the need for research but shared that sometimes government entities don't work well together and sometimes they also need to be willing to consult with industry as well. John M. asks if there has been a change in the virulence of the pathogens. Have new super bugs evolved? Yes, that is probably happening.
John presented Bonnie with a book for the literacy project.
