Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

Australian Urban Bowerbirds Outdo Their Rural Cousins.

Australian rural Bowerbirds generally use sticks, leaves,
And some human debris,
To decorate their 'bachelor digs' to lure in females.
Urban Bowerbirds use plastic wrappers, wire, bottle caps,
Glass shards, and even coins to decorate their courtship structures.
A distinct difference exists between urban and rural male birds.
Male urban Great Bowerbirds collect approximately 93 items
Compared to about 20 items for rural birds.
One male urban bird 'overachiever' gathered more than 300 objects.
When tested, both urban and rural birds prefer human-made items.
City birds prefer vibrant reds (coated wire) and bold greens (broken glass).
There are species differences. Satin Bowerbirds hoard royal blue plastics,
While Great Bowerbirds find green, white, and red objects.
Plastic and metal pieces last longer than delicate berries or flowers.
The downside of human materials is that birds often get caught in plastic rings,
Resulting in injuries or death unless humans come to the rescue!
